Television Light Bulbs
The next generation of big-screen television will
probably use a replaceable lamp. Modern rear projection televisions
are moving away from three picture tube technology; they use lamps
as light sources in their LCD, DLP or LCoS engines. Most of these
lamps are metal halide (high pressure mercury) and last from 1000
to 4000 hours.
Getting longer life from your big-screen TV lamp requires regular
cleaning of the filter and the area around the bulb once a month.
Excessive heat caused by dust and poor air flow will decrease
lamp life. If there is a smoker or a pet with shedding hair in
the home, regular cleaning becomes more important. Once a year,
call us to disassemble the TV and clean the inside screen, mirrors
and light-path system.
Although the lamp may be included in an extended warranty, purchase
an extra bulb and learn how to change it yourself, thus avoiding
downtime. Brightness output decreases through out bulb life. You
may even wish to change the lamp when the screen brightness diminishes.
Be aware that there are halogen bulbs being sold much less expensively
than metal halide bulbs; but halogen bulb life is usually under
100 hours, and they produce a yellowish image.
If you purchase an extended warranty contract on one of these
new televisions, make sure that the replaceable lamp is included
in the coverage. As not all lamps are easy to change, check if
coverage includes the installation.
We stock many of the manufacturers’ lamps. Expect to pay
$300.00 to $500.00 for an original equipment projection TV lamp.
