High Definition Television Timeline

The recently released 9/11 Commission report urged that Congress hurry the adoption of HDTV to allocate the present television spectrum to public safety groups resolving interoperability problems that harassed rescue units at the World Trade Center. On the other side of the technology movement, the National Association of Broadcasters has continually attempted to postpone HDTV acceptance because of the high cost of new digital television equipment.
The current law will require TV stations to return the present television analog spectrum when 85% of the households in a market have obtained digital reception equipment. That could be either by using a digital TV or a set-top box. The 85% provision could put off HDTV for many years. In order to move the technology on and provide the spectrum for public safety groups, Sen. John McCain (R) has introduced a bill requiring digital TV transition to be completed unconditionally as of December 31, 2008. We anticipate that the FCC will endorse the bill and support this date. As of January 01, 2009, all regular National Television System Committee (NTSC) TV sets operating today will require digital-to-analog converters.

Windows XP Service Pack 2

The latest upgrade of Microsoft's desktop XP operating system is named Service Pack 2 (SP-2). Industry sources report that about 93% of users have no problems with the upgrade. If you are in a business using tape-backup software, at home playing online games across the Internet or using pirated software, this upgrade is not for you. But if you want to take advantage of many new security and dependability features, install SP-2. Go to www.support.microsoft.com to read about features and known software conflicts. Be aware that this upgrade does not take the place of anti-virus or anti-spyware programs.

Anti-Spyware Tools

Any Windows-based computer connected to the Internet requires constant defensive maintenance. A good anti-virus program is absolutely necessary. In addition to virus problems, now there are many equally damaging spyware problems including Trojans, system monitors, keyloggers and adware. One major concern of being hit by spyware is identity theft. To learn about anti-spy tools, personal firewalls, spam blockers and privacy monitoring; go to www.spychecker.com.
This location also has a list of downloadable spyware removal software at low cost, and many are freeware. Each download link contains explanations and guides for installation. Most of the anti-spyware tools are individually not capable of guarding against all problems. We recommend that you install and use two of these programs for best results. Example: Try a combination of Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. These, and many other options are available as freeware at the address www.spychecker.com
